Project to promote entrepreneurship among Haritha Karma Sena workers
The Harithakarmasena Entrepreneurship Development Project has been launched by the Government of Kerala to improve the livelihoods and financial stability of Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) workers engaged in waste collection in urban local bodies. Implemented by the Local Self-Government Department with the support of the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP), the initiative aims to provide entrepreneurial opportunities, create additional income sources, and promote self-reliance among members.
By equipping HKS workers with the skills, resources, and technical support needed to establish and manage their own enterprises, the project seeks to transform them into successful entrepreneurs. This approach not only enhances their economic prospects but also strengthens their role in advancing sustainable waste management practices across the state. Under this project, 186 new enterprises will be established across the state, benefitting more than 7,000 Harithakarmasena members from 93 municipalities. An investment of over ₹24 crore has been secured, aiming to create sustainable income sources and promote self-reliance among members.
The enterprises being set up include production units for cloth bags, organic fertiliser, mulch, and inoculum, as well as scrap trading units and sanitary waste collection facilities. To strengthen entrepreneurial capacity, KILA and other partner agencies will provide skill development training and technical expertise to members. For effective implementation, monitoring committees will function at the municipal level, supported by technical and financial assistance from the district-level units and agencies of KSWMP. This project is expected to significantly contribute to the social and economic upliftment of Harithakarmasena members while promoting sustainable waste management practices across Kerala.
