Debut directors’ own IFFK

The impending IFFK will be providing ample exposure to debut directors by featuring more than 30 of their movies.  Close to 20 among them are from Asian continent, and of them, a majority are from India itself.

Eight directors are participating in the international competition in which 14 films would be screened. As many as 11 Indian filmmakers are partaking in the festival with their first movies, of which seven movies will be shown in the category of Malayalam Cinema Today, three movies under Indian Cinema Now, and one under the Festival Kaleidoscope section. The directorial debut of two female directors has also been incorporated.

As many as 78 world films would be the festival’s prime charm where a handful of newcomers can be found. Costa Rican filmmaker Valentina Maurel’s burgeoning movie ‘I have Electric Dreams’ had gained recognition in various film festivals and besides bagging Golden Peacock Award in IFFI. American director Lotfy Nathan has made his debut movie ‘Harka’, the first film made in Tunisia after the Arab spring. It is the winner of the best performance award at Cannes.

 Charlotte Well’s movie ‘Aftersun’ had won the best picture awards in Athens International Film Festival. The universal themes of death and grief, love and resistance, undefeated hope and pursuit of dreams are the themes discussed in the film. The struggles of being a third gender is portrayed emotionally in ‘A place of our own’. The films, ‘Utama’, ‘Plan 75’, and ‘Memoryland’ portray the life of the aged. Seven movies from Malayalam shed light on the prevailing subtle realities of diverse social realms irrespective of time.
