78 MOVIES FROM OVER 50 COUNTRIES; WOMEN FILM MAKERS’ DOMINANCE AT IFFK

The 27 th IFFK 2022 has uniquely curated 78 movies of women film makers from more than 50 countries.

The World Cinema category offers movie lovers a bouquet of 25 films by women film makers from across the globe. The list comprises French director Mia Hansen Love, noted for her transparent directorial skills, Moroccan director Maryam Touzani and Cannes Camera d’Or winner Leonor Serraille among others.  This category features films from over 50 countries that have received accolades at top film festivals, including oscar nominations.

The winner of the Golden Leopard award at Locarno Film Festival, Brazilian director Julia Murat’s  ‘Rule 34’ is the story of a young law student whose sexual desires lead her into a world of violence and eroticism. Valentina Maurel’s Spanish film ‘I Have Electric Dreams’ which narrates the complexities of the momentary realities of life are some of the women directors’ cinema which adorn the category.

‘One fine morning’ by Mia Hansen Love is a subtle, tender film that captures a more realistic, mundane take on Parisian life. The female-led drama of Saskia Diesing’s ‘Lost Transport’, which was inspired by true events tells the story of the final days of World War II when German soldiers abandon a deportation train, leaving the fate of its occupants in the hands of advancing Russian troops.

Iran’s Saeed Roustayi’s film ‘Leila’s Brothers’ puts the spotlight on a woman driven to distraction by the indolent, incompetent patriarchy.

LGBTQ+ films will be screened under this category comprising Marcelo Gomes ‘Paloma’  which is based on the true story of a poor trans woman who struggled to marry her partner in a religious ceremony. ‘The Blue caftan’ by Maryam Touzani about a gay man exploring his sexuality is the another one in the section.

Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund’s satirical film ‘Triangle of Sadness’, Cannes award winner Tarik Saleh ‘s political thriller ‘Boy from Heaven’, ‘Lord of the  Ants’, based on the life of Italian poet Aldo Braibanti who faced legal proceedings for homosexuality, ‘Harka’, the first film made in Tunisia after the Arab Spring, ‘My Neighbor Adolf’ by Leon Prudovsky and Swiss director Jan Gassmann’s film ’99 Moons’, are the other films which come under this category.
