Feminine touch: IDSFFK shines bright with the movies of 109 women directors

262 movies across 12 categories, the 14th International Documentary and Short Film Festival celebrates women directors. The works of 109 women filmmakers have been selected to be screened under varying categories. The special category of iTales gleams with all female filmmakers. The category features movies shot on iPhone mentored by Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaff in collaboration with the A.R. Rahman foundation. With 17 movies in the International Non-Fiction category, 12 in the Long Documentary, four films in Competition Short Fiction and seven movies in the International Fiction, the contribution made by women directors in the film festival is tremendous.

Documentary filmmaker, editor and winner of the 14th IDSFFK’s Lifetime Achievement Award; Reena Mohan, alongside the national award winner Divya Cowasji and other prominent filmmakers including Sethulakshmi M, Sudha Padmaja Francis, Anjali Monteiro, Pooja Shyam Prabhat, Meera Krishnan, Madhumitha Venugopal, Sukanya G, Savita Singh, Megha J Shetty, Dhiviya Jessy are among the female filmmakers who have contributed to the fiesta.

Sonali Biswas’s ‘A Rare Gift’, Radhika Murthy’s Marathi movie ‘How was the Date?’, Kukbi by Karuna Vishwanath and Nischhal Sharma’s Rimi will be screened under the Focus Short Fiction category. On the other hand; Payal Kapadia’s ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing ‘, Miriam Chandy Menacherry’s From the Shadows #Missingirls discussing the theme of child sex trafficking, Rebana Liz John’s Ladies Only, a.k.a. by Geetika Narang Abbasi are selected under the category of Competition Long Documentary.

The Focus Long Documentary section contains movies; The Show Must Go On by Divya Cowasji and Shuchi Prasad’s The Little Book of the Little Man. Radha Indu Rana’s Dhoop and Padmasree Murali’s Manjadikaalam becomes the only female creations under the music video and animation categories respectively. ‘Turn’ positions Sharika P Prasad as the lone female director in the campus film category.

The competition short fiction category includes four women-curated movies; Meera Krishnan’s 44, Madhura Dalimbkar’s Marathi movie Didi, Bad Egg by Mehak Jamal and Phulawa Khamkar’s Fish.
