IFFK tribute to legendary films of 14 Auteurs from 10 Countries

IFFK is honouring 14 Auteurs from 10 countries by screening 15 of their films. Among them, ‘Tori and Lokita’ directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne is the inaugural film of the fest.

Cinephile’s icon Kim Ki-duk is getting honoured through screening his last work, ‘Call of God’. The other favourite directors from South Korea– Hong Sang-soo and Park Chan-wook–are also in the list. Two movies of Hong Sang-soo, ‘Walk Up’ and ‘The Novelist’s Film’ will be featured along with another South Korean movie ‘Broker’, directed by Japanese film maker Hirokazu Koreeda.

IFFK is exhibiting two Iranian movies, that of Jafar Panahi and Bahman Ghobadi. ‘No Bears’ of Panahi is with the hashtag ‘freejafarpanahi’. The French woman director Claire Denis’s movie ‘Both Sides of the Blade’ can be traced in the same category.

The surrealist movie ‘Fairytale’ by Russian film maker Alexander Sokurov, heart touching American movie ‘The Whale’ by Darren Aronofsky, ‘R.M.N’ by Cristian Mungiu, Fatih Akin’s ‘Rhinegold’ premiering together with Krzysztof Zanussi’s ‘The Perfect Number’ and ‘When the Waves are Gone’, directed by Lav Diaz are the other movies scheduled for the Auteurs section.

All these movies have already garnered dozens of awards from various film festivals. Each of them is conferring different themes of several genres. The movie ‘Walk Up’ portrays the ordinary incidents happening in the lives of three persons inside an apartment. The message, even if justice is not available, people should at least act with a good conscience is the prime concern discussed in ‘The Four Walls’, directed by Bahman Ghobadi.

The film ‘Broker’ revolves around characters associated with baby boxes, which allow infants to be dropped off anonymously to be cared for by others. ‘No Bears’ is about the anguish of Iran and the artists working there. The film’s creator, film-maker and democracy campaigner Jafar Panahi, has recently been sentenced to six years in jail after long periods of house arrest since a bogus propaganda charge slapped on him in 2011.

Movies in the genres of psychological fictions, dark humour, thriller dramas have been included in Auteur Odes. Auteur directors have a distinct style that varies from film to film, and they frequently occupy other duties, such as writing, editing, and occasionally appearing in their films. Such filmmakers should have some signature elements in their films which enable the global audience to easily recognize the artistic impression of the directors’ work. Those movies must be technically competent and must display certain regular traits of styles; the story is open to multiple interpretations due to its expansive meaning.
